Activity # 6 Christmas Chakra Cookies

Activity # 6 Christmas Chakra Cookies

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Melvin wanted to get involved in some of the baking activities because they look like a lot of fun. Melvin decided to make Christmas Cookies with a Chakra twist.

Things you will Need:
For the Cookies
250ml (1 cup) butter
375ml (1.5 cup) sugar
2 eggs
750ml (3 cups) flour
10ml (2 tsp.) baking powder
1ml(1/4 tsp.) salt
5ml (1 tsp.) vanilla

For the "paint"
3 egg yolks
food coloring in the chakra colors
1 bowl for each color

How to Make the Cookies
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. Cream (that means squish) the butter and sugar together. Stir in the eggs one at a time. Add the vanilla
3. Mix in the flour, baking powder and salt.
4. With your hands!, shape the dough into a ball, then roll it out until it's smooth, flat, and about 0.5cm thick
5. Use cookie cutters, or biscuit cutters (or the top of a round glass or cup) to cut out shapes.
6. Bake your cookies for 8-10 minutes.
7. When the cookies are still warm, poke a hole in any shapes that you want to hang on a tree or use as an ornament. Melvin got Heather to use a straw to make the holes in the ones in the picture.

How to Paint the Cookies
1. Get out 6 bowls (one for each chakra color except white).
2. Put 1 egg yolk in of 3 bowls, add 1ml (1/4 tsp) water to each bowl and stir.
3. Separate each of the yolks into another bowl. Now you should have 6 bowls that each have about half an egg yolk in them.
4. Put a drop or two of food coloring in each bowl to create the chakra colors.
5. Use a paint brush (if it's clean!), or a food brush to paint the colors onto the cookies.
6. Put the cookies back in the 350 oven for about 5 minutes to bake your paint.

Once the cookies are cooled you can put ribbon or yarn through the hole and hang them up. Or you can just eat whatever colors feel right to you!

Melvin got Heather to make the sugar cookies, but you can buy already made cookies and decorate with the paint.  You can  also make the cookies ahead of time and store them in the freezer to paint when you are ready. Once they are painted just pop them in the oven for about 5 minutes. You can use unpainted cookies to be "white chakra cookies" or you can put a bit of white frosting on them. When the cookies are still warm you can add sprinkles and fancy food decorations as well.  Use your imagination!! Enjoy your colors!!

Asteroids

I think I'm going to have  pretty good view of the 2005 YU55 asteorid today! It's coming as close to me as another asteroid did in 1976.  I'm kind of glad that after tonight, I won't likely see another one of these things until 2028 according to scientists!

Scentists seem pretty excited about this asteroid. It's very dark and spining slowly and they think there is some carbon matter in it.  They are happy to be able to study it as it passes by.

I'm just glad I've got all your red balloons!!!   But if you felt like coloring a red balloon picture and putting it in your window for me tonight, or reading Melvin's Balloons before you go to bed,  that would be okay too. That will keep me from being scared and by Thursday I'll be full and glowing!

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Peaceful White Balloons

Wow, Halloween looked pretty wild and exciting for a lot of you guys down there.  I heard quite a bit of Halloween howling too! I noticed some of you had a tough time getting up and going to school and work this morning.

Heather has some Bach Flower suggestions for getting over Halloween candy and excitement. Check out her blog at http://pixiedusthealing.blogspot.com/2011/11/halloween-sugar-hangover-detox-with.html

This afternoon might be a good time to curl up with "Melvin's Balloons".  I'm sending peaceful white balloons down to you all.

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Lunar Samhain

Today, October 26th is Lunar Samhain. In Celtic tradition, this marks the beginning of the Lunar year. They had bonfires and parties to celebrate the darkest night.  I'm in a New Moon phase tonight which means you won't see me. I'll be up there, just sleeping for tonight, so you have to make your own light.

It was a Celtic tradition to hollow out  turnip, carve a face in it and put a candle inside. They lite the candle and placed the turnip in the window to keep evil spirits away.  Heather thinks pumpkins are easier to carve than turnips and a bit more hollow on the inside anyway, maybe that's why we use them for jack-o-lanterns today.

Heather's going to carve a pumpkin tonight and put a candle in it to celebrate Lunar Samhain.  I'm going to  gather your red balloons around me and get a long night's sleep so I can shine down on you on Halloween!

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Melvin Goes to Clark's Harbour Elementary

Heather and I had a grand adventure last week. As part of the Nova Scotia Writer's Federation, "Writer's In the School" Program
http://melvinsballoons.blogspot.com/2011/08/teacherslibrarians-bring-melvin-to.html,  we went to Clark's Harbour Elementary School!  Clark's Harbour is an Island on the Southern tip of Nova Scotia.  Heather and I think it is beautiful.  We drove on a causeway to get to the Island and saw lots of sandy beaches, waves, boats, and a lighthouse or two!

Heather read Melvin's Balloons to all the kids in the school, and the teacher's too!  We had a lot of fun talking about colors, writing, and the story of how Melvin's Balloons was created.

Heather read some of her other manuscripts (book ideas that haven't been published yet) too.  She got some really good suggestions and is going to make a few changes here and there thanks to the editing advice she got.  There are a lot of creative kids out there in Clark's Harbour.  Heather and I think there is an author or two in that group!

Everyone at the school made Heather and I feel really welcome.  It's because of people like the students and teachers at Clark's Harbour that writing is fun for Heather, and I can come to life.  We send green balloon colors to all of you!

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Happy Thanksgiving

In Canada, this weekend will be the Thanksgiving weekend.  I know that because I have been watching you making and coloring pictures of turkeys, pumpkins, and fall leaves. It looks like fun! It seems like the colors of fall and thanksgiving are reds, oranges, and yellows. Those are 3 of my favorites.  The fall colors help me feel safe and secure. When I feel like that I am brave enough to try doing things by myself and in my own way. The yellow gives me the energy to work on projects like getting ready for Thanksgiving. And Halloween is coming up soon too!

It seems like thanksgiving means family get-to-gathers, feasts, walks in the fall leaves, picking out pumpkins, and a day off school! In some places it means parades, and that means balloons!!

Thanksgiving is about saying thanks for all the things you have and that nature has given you. That sounds nice. I'd like to say thanks for all the colors you give to me! Thank you for helping me to understand my feelings!

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Raise a Reader Day

I am filled with yellow colors today because today, September 28, is "Raise a Reader Day". In Canada this is a national event where newspapers spread the word about the importance of reading. http://www.canada.com/literacy/raiseareader/Local+sponsorship+opportunities/5442188/story.html  Funds raised from these events help support local literacy programs.

Heather was surrounded by books when she was little and appreciates the way they opened up the world for her. We both think one of the best ways to "raise a reader" is to share your ability to read with someone else. I know how great kids feel when people take the time to read to them. It makes them glow with green!

Heather is sometimes asked by parents if their child is too young for Melvin's Balloons.   The answer is always "no"!  You are never too young to share a story.  You're never too young to be read to. And you're never to old to think about me, and how colors make you feel.

So on "raise a reader day", curl up with me and a child and share the gift of reading.

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Pier 21 Book Signing

There are four cruise ships in the Halifax Pier 21 port tomorrow. That means I will get to meet people from all over the world. Heather will be there (at the Carrefour Bookstore Kiosk) to sign copies of Melvin's Balloons. I can't  wait to hear more balloon stories!

Melvin Moon

Moon Cakes & Fall Equinox

September 23rd marks the fall equinox this year. This is the time of year when there is about the same amount of daylight and moonlight, or lightness and darkness. After that date, the days get shorter for awhile. That's perfectly fine by me, because it means I have more time to glow in the sky! So I feels like everyone should celebrate the fall equinox!

There are lots of traditions and celebrations around the September or Fall equinox. The Chinese have one I particularly like. They call the mid-autumn festival "Moon Festival".  It's not always celebrated on exactly the fall equinox and they usually time it with my phases, and celebrate on the nights when I am full. They celebrate the abundance of harvest.

One of the main foods for this celebration is moon cakes! In their tradition, they used to make these cakes as offerings to me- the moon!  The cake is made in lots of different ways and some are filled with lotus seeds, sesame seeds, duck eggs or dried fruit.

Heather isn't quite that good at cooking, so I got her to find an easy moon cake recipe.  She found one on the Internet http://www.dltk-holidays.com/china/easy_chinese_mooncakes.htm  This one won't look like the moon cake picture above (Heather's didn't even come close!), but it will taste pretty good.  You could also just make a round cake, decorate it with yellow frosting and put my face on it.  Or make cupcakes and decorate each one exactly the way you want to.

It doesn't matter how you celebrate, just that you do celebrate!

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Full Moon & a good time to wear Purple

I am shining bright and full for the next few days. Yippee!!  It's a good time for you to wear purple to feel connected to everybody.  These days, I have a pretty good idea what you are feeling and I'm watching over you and thinking about you.

If you don't know why you are feeling drawn to the color purple, it's a good time to get your own copy of Melvin's Balloons!  You can find it in bookstores or  order it online http://www.brylerpublications.com/melvinsballoons.php

It's also a good time to check out the Nova Scotia Writer's Federation, Writer's in the Schools program and have Heather bring Melvins' Balloons to your school. http://melvinsballoons.blogspot.com/2011/08/teacherslibrarians-bring-melvin-to.html  September 15th (Thursday) is the day to select your bookings if you are a teacher or a librarian. We can talk about all the colors!

For now, I'm just shining down on you and singing strong!

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Teachers/Librarians: Bring Melvin to School

I really like going to school, because it means I can  share my story and listen to your lost balloon tales.  I also like to hear how you feel about colors. We can have a lot of fun doing activities together.

So this year, I got Heather to join the Writers In The School (WITS) program. This is a program sponsored  through the Nova Scotia Writer's Federation.

If you're a teacher or school librarian  in Nova Scotia, you can go onto the  Writer's Federation website http://www.writers.ns.ca/wits/index.html to find out more about the program. On September 15th you can go onto the website and book Heather to come to your school this year. Heather and I will have information up on the Participating Author's page in September.

For now, you can still check out the program, figure out a good day for you and your classes, and be ready to book in September.

You can also go to Heather's website to find out more about us or to book a visit directly through us  www.pixiedusthealing.com

I think school should be fun and I'm happy to help!

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

"Sweet Shack & Bach Bar": A Chakra Book For Adults

Melvin has been helping Heather work on a book for adults so they can read about Chakra's and colors too. This one is a Creative Non-Fiction novella (short novel).

With the aid of Wise Woman Counsel, a talented cat, a bit of magic, and of course, the moon, characters are eased through chakra development with Bach Flower essences. With "try this at home" recipes for each of the chakras this book is food for the body as well as the soul.

Click here http://www.brylerpublications.com/sweetshack.php to  pre-order your copy of  "Sweet Shack and Bach Bar".

Pinatas

I was feeling very creative from all your orange colors so I got Heather to try out a craft to make a pinata using a balloon.  We had a lot of fun.  It's pretty messy and Heather was covered with flour and water and glue. That's part of the fun! You can find the instructions on the blog http://melvinsballoons.blogspot.com/2011/08/activity-5-balloon-pinata.html

You have to be pretty patient to make this craft because it takes a few days to dry. Make sure you are safe when you are hitting the pinata too!

You can use the same activity to make lots of things other than pinatas.  You can cover the balloon with more layers of newspaper and make a globe of the earth, or a moon!!!

If you only cover half of the balloon with newspaper you can make a mask. Leave holes for your eyes. This might be fun for Halloween.

Use your own sense of creativity to make something that makes you feel really good.  If it turns out great- let me know!!

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Activity # 5 Balloon Pinata

Activity # 5:  Make a Balloon Pinata

Pinatas are a Mexican tradition for celebrations. Melvin likes them because you can make them using a balloon. You can make a pinata in whatever shape or design you want. They are a great way to use your creative powers! But beware!  This can be a messy craft and you need to do it over a couple of days to allow drying time. You also have to be careful when hitting the pinata that you don't hit anyone else!

Things you will Need:

1 balloon
strips of newspaper
2 cups of flour
3 cups of water
glue (white craft glue works well)
colored tissue paper
string or ribbon
Candies, light weight toys, erasers, treat surprises of your choice
paint (optional)
paint brush (optional)
blindfold (optional)

1. Blow up the balloon and tie the end.
2. Mix the flour and water together to make your paste
3. Rip the newspapers into long strips
4. Dip the newspaper strips into your paste and place it on the balloon. Cover the balloon with the strips leaving a hole at the tied end of the balloon.
5. Set the balloon aside to dry.
6. Place 2 more layers of newspapers over the first allowing time in between to dry.
7. When the final layer is dry, pop and remove the balloon.
8. Paint your paper balloon if desired.
9. Glue the strips of tissue paper onto the paper in the design of your choice. If you don't paint your paper balloon you can use a paint brush to cover it with glue and then attach the tissue paper to the glue. Fringes in the tissue paper help make your pinata look festive. You can also attach ribbons or other light objects to the pinata. Be creative!
10. Fill your pinata with wrapped candies, or light weight toys. Layer the candies with balled up strips of tissue or newspaper so the surprises don't all fall out at once.
11. Punch 2 holes on either side of your opening and attach the string through the holes. Or you can wrap the pinata in ribbon like a present, bringing the end of the strings up to the top, so you can hang the pinata.
12. Tie your pinata to a tree branch, clothesline, or hook, leaving lots of room to swing.
13. Take turns using a stick to hit the pinata. To make it harder, you can blindfold the person swinging the stick so they have find the pinata. Stay well away from the person swinging but guide them so they don't get hurt!

Melvin's Thoughts about Orange

Whew!  I made it through a bunch of meteor showers and the appearance of a comet without any damage. Because of all your red colors, I felt very brave and strong through it all and shone my brightest ever on the full moon night.  Now I'm in a "wanning moon" phase. It looks to you like I am getting smaller. I'm not, I'm still here- it just looks that way.

Since I feel strong and brave, and have some time to think before the new moon, I'm thinking about your orange colors. Heather tells me that's the color for the second chakra.

Orange makes me feel independent and creative. When I have lots of orange around me I can do things on my own. I don't  do things just because other moons are. I also don't do things just because other moons are bugging me, or telling me I should. I do things because it feels right for me.

I don't see a lot of adults wearing orange or choosing that color much. Sometimes I think they get too busy to be creative. Too bad.  Kids really like orange.  I can even see some orange painted walls on teenagers' rooms down there! Good for you.  If you want to do things all on your own- choose orange and see how you feel.  You might make something really great!

I'm feeling so creative, I'm working on a craft idea. It's a messy one! Stay tuned. If it works out, I'll get Heather to post the instructions on my blog.

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Red Balloons for Protection

I am getting ready for a full moon night on August 13th. It will be a pretty big night because it's also a big meteor shower night.

Good thing I've received all your lost balloons. I've needed the colors lately. Thank you for the red ones in particular. There have been a lot of meteor showers this summer. Your red balloons have helped me feel safe.

I guess some of you will be getting ready to go back to school soon. If going to school feels as scary to you as a meteor shower does to me- wear something red. Red socks or shoes work really well Heather tells me!

I'll be shining down on you and protecting you. I'm always up here, even during the day when you can't see me!

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Howl With Melvin and Win a Book

The coyotes will be howling at me tomorrow night. It's a full moon and a lunar eclipse so I will be hiding for a few minutes. I hope I don't scare anyone when I jump back out from behind the shadows.

Your blue balloons help me sing with the coyotes. Blue helps me express myself. I can say what I mean better when I have blue ballons.

Tell Heather what you would like to say to me (Melvin Moon) and win a free copy of my book "Melvin's Balloons".

Post your reply as a comment and we'll make a draw on Summer Solstice (June 21st) from the comments received.

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Mother's Day Green Balloons

Sunday,is Mother's Day, and I wanted to say Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers in the world. Since I started getting green balloons, I understand what love feels like. Of all the different types of love I see down there on earth, I can feel that the love between mother and child is very strong and special. It makes me feel good knowing that all kinds of special events are being planned to celebrate this love.

If you're trying to come up with a gift for your mother, it seems to me that many of them consider a hug to be the best gift of all! Or you could color a picture of a green balloon and explain why you love them so much.

I see a few balloons being blown up for the event as well! Don't worry if one gets away from you. I'll look after it!

Happy Mother's Day.

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Spring Peepers Singing

Heather and I have been listening to the peepers singing at night. Their arrival is a sure sign of spring and Heather seems pretty happy about that.

I am used to singing with the coyotes since I got all those blue balloons, but I figure I can sign with the frogs too. The ones I see are mostly greenish, although they are pretty hard to spot, especially from away up here. Their sound and color makes me realize how much I love all the sounds and sights of spring.

Heather found a website where you can learn about peepers and listen to their sound. If you can't hear peepers where you are, or to learn more about them, check into National Geographic's website and listen to the audio take there. http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/amphibians/spring-peeper.html

Peepers only sing at night so we keep each other company!

Melvin Moon

Easter Colors

Easter is coming up this weekend and from my spot up here above you, I can see people getting ready for all kinds of celebrations. For some people, Easter is a religious holiday, for others it's a celebration of spring and rebirth.

Whatever you are celebrating at Easter, it seems it's a pretty colorful time of year with painted eggs and fancy hats. The most common Easter colors are yellow and purple. That makes sense to me.

The yellow color makes me feel energized. I feel like I can do anything I set out to do. There is a lot of energy around us with all those flowers starting to blossom, the trees getting new leaves, and grass starting to grow again.

The purple color makes me realize I can understand what you are doing, and sometimes what you are feeling. Purple helps people feel connected to nature, as though we are a part of nature's spring celebration.

If you're having trouble finding hidden treasure like those painted eggs, try wearing purple- maybe it will help your intuition. Then you'll know just where those things are.

If you're celebrating with balloons and one gets away- wave to me and smile. I'll be smiling right back at you!

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I hope you are wearing something green. Today is the day a lot of people in the world celebrate a Patron Saint of Ireland- St. Patrick. Green is the color associated with these celebrations. Green is also the color that can help you feel loved.

It you happen to have a St. Patrick's balloon that gets away on you- don't worry I'll look after it, and I'll feel the love. I also might feel a bit of the "luck of the Irish"!

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone. Melvin sees a lot of red colors today in the Valentine's Day celebrations. He figures that's because red makes us feel safe and secure and we all love that feeling. Melvin sees a lot of tears of Valentine's day too. Sometimes people are disappointed or hurt if the celebrations didn't turn out the way they wanted it to. So Melvin sends green balloons to everyone to celebrate pure love. Melvin wants everyone to know they are loved! Happy Valentine's Day!!

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Happy Groundhog/Pancake day!

February 2nd is groundhog day. Today, tradition explains, that the groundhog will come out to check on the weather. If it's sunny and he sees his shadow he will go back to his burrow and we are in for another 6 weeks of winter. If he comes out and doesn't see his shadow (it's cloudy or stormy)we are supposed to have an early spring.

It's also pancake day. This tradition comes from an ancient myth around about the solar wheel and round pancakes are a symbol of the sun. Melvin thinks maybe you should see if you can make that pancake look like a moon face!! Maybe offer one to that groundhog- he's sure to be hungry after sleeping so long!

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon

Ask Melvin and Heather a Question

Whenever I go somewhere with "Melvin's Balloons" I get asked lots of great questions. I love to try and answer any question I can about Melvin's Balloons, the writing process, or how Melvin came to life. If you have a question for me, or a specific one for Melvin, post it as a comment to this entry and we will try and answer it for you!

Activity # 4

Activity # 4: Write a story for Melvin Moon

1.A lot of great books started out as just good stories told around the campfire, at the dinner table, or in bed at night. Read the “Dedication Page” in Melvin’s Balloons to see how he came to life.

2.Think about a favourite family story you have. It might be a story your parents tell about something you did, a crazy thing a pet did, or something someone told you to make you feel better.

3.Think about how the story makes you feel. Does it make you feel sad, happy, angry, embarrassed, or proud?

4.Imagine yourself telling the story to Melvin Moon. He likes to hear how people feel and what makes them feel the way they do. It doesn’t have to be true or exactly the way it happened. Use your imagination to make it even better.

5.Write down your story so you can tell it the same way again and again.

6.Publish your story as a “comment” to this blog entry -Activity # 4.

Hebbville School Visit

Melvin visited 8 different classes at Hebbville Elementary school last week. As part of their literacy week celebrations they were having "Cuddle Up and Read Day" so Melvin felt very much at home with all the pajamas, stuffed animals, milk and cookies!

The libraian, Mrs Rosborough had things very organized so Heather was able to just go from class to class having fun. Melvin and Heather discovered there are a lot of really great writers at Hebbville and a million wonderful ideas! Heather was very impressed with how important books are to Hebbville and how much work has been done on the writing process.

Heather and Melvin were given some wonderful drawings that have become very special treasures- thank you! And Heather got some hugs too!!

You can search through this blog to find the activities that Heather left with the teachers. Feel free to post a comment or ask a question!

Melvin Moon

Full Moon Creativity

It's a full moon tonight so Melvin will be shining bright. According to astrology it's a full moon in Cancer and that means people often feel more creative than usual. It's a good time to link to your orange colors and create a new story or a picture. Today is a good day to color a balloon for Melvin and hang it in your window so he can see it tonight while he's signing full and bright. Don't forget to tell him why you picked the color you did!

Melvin Moon

Meteor Shower

Melvin is very thankful for all the red balloons people have sent him! Last night was quite a meteor shower and he wasn’t scared at all! Melvin was in a New Moon phase so he wasn’t shining as brightly and that meant Heather could see the meteors better.

Most meteor showers happen when Earth runs into large clouds of particles left behind from comets, but no one is really quite sure what the parent object was for the Quadrantids (pronounced Kwa-drun-tids) that we saw last night. Some scientists think the source of these meteors may be from a comet that broke apart during a collision over 500 year ago. Melvin doesn’t remember the incident but he’s very thankful you have helped him get over his fears!

Sincerely,

Melvin Moon
